Many smartwatch enthusiasts expected Apple to launch the Apple Watch Ultra 3 alongside the new iPhone 16 models and the Apple Watch Series 10. Recent rumors suggested this too, even though aside from a new color variant, nothing was known about the future Ultra 3's specifications. To be honest, there wasn’t much to speculate about, as Apple unveiled the Apple Watch Ultra 2 (2024), an updated version of the Ultra 2 (2023).
Apple Watch Ultra 2 (2024), Titanium Black
The Apple Watch Ultra 2 (2024) does not introduce new features compared to the previous model, but it comes with a black titanium case that makes it look completely different from the Apple Watch Ultra 2 (2023).
Even though the new Apple Watch Ultra 2 Black does not bring new functionalities or features, we have to admit that the black titanium finish looks very good. Honestly, during the presentation event, it took me a while to realize that it was actually the Apple Watch Ultra 2 (2023) with a new color and a new strap model.
We must acknowledge that, in addition to the black titanium case, the distinctive appearance of the Apple Watch Ultra 2 Black is also due to the new Titanium Milanese Loop bands introduced by Apple with this new model.
Compared to Milanese Loop bands for the Apple Watch Series 9 (or older models), the Titanium Milanese Loop for the Apple Watch Ultra 2 features a modified design and a more robust fastening system to withstand intense activities. Apple has moved away from the magnetic closure and introduced a new, highly efficient clasp system that securely holds the Titanium Milanese Loop band on your wrist.
The price for the black model of the Apple Watch Ultra 2 (2024) is the same as for the Apple Watch Ultra 2, but if you want the Titanium Milanese Loop version, you will need to pay an additional $100, totaling $899.
In conclusion, if you already have an Apple Watch Ultra 2, there is no upgrade to be made. The Apple Watch Ultra 3 is likely to be released next year. This fall’s Apple event only saw the release of the Titanium Black color option for the Apple Watch Ultra 2.
It remains a mystery that Apple has not clarified yet, whether the new Apple Watch Ultra 2 (2024) Titanium Black units have the blood oxygen saturation sensor and if it can be used outside the USA. We already know that the new Apple Watch Series 10 generation does not include this sensor, due to a patent-related process Apple lost at the end of 2023.

Monday (18-12-2023), Apple said it would have to suspend sales Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 to comply with an International Trade Commission request prohibiting the importation into the United States of components related to the blood oxygen monitoring technology of Apple Watch. The ITC issued the ruling after ruling that the blood oxygen sensor of Apple Watch infringes patents owned by medical device company Masimo.
This sales ban also applies to refurbished models of Apple Watch Series 7 and Apple Apple Watch 8, because they also contain the blood oxygen measurement sensor. Apple Watch The SE is the only model not affected by this ban.
So, if you are not from the USA and you have an Apple Watch Ultra 2 with a functioning blood oxygen saturation measurement app, the new Apple Watch Ultra 2 (2024) Titanium Black units might not have this sensor.
