AirTag is a smart tracking device launched by Apple in 2021, designed to help users locate lost items such as keys, wallets, or luggage. The product debuted after nearly two years of rumors, during which there were many signs it would eventually hit the market, especially given the integrations being prepared in iOS 2. Nearly four years after the release of the first generation, it seems an AirTag 13 device is on its way.
With a compact, coin-shaped (or disc-like) design, the AirTag works through the Find My network, using Bluetooth and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technologies for precise location tracking. The AirTag also includes a built-in speaker that emits sounds, making it easier to find when the owner is nearby. Additionally, the device comes with security and privacy features to prevent misuse, such as anti-tracking notifications.

What’s New in AirTag 2, and When Will It Be Released?
According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Apple plans to launch a new model, AirTag 2, around the middle of next year. While the design will remain largely the same, the new AirTag, internally referred to as B589, will include three major improvements:
- Extended range
- An improved wireless chip
- Enhanced privacy
While the first two features are somewhat expected, it’s encouraging to see Apple place greater emphasis on privacy with AirTag 2. There have been numerous reports of AirTags being used for unauthorized tracking of individuals, and some users have modified devices to disable the speaker, which otherwise emits anti-tracking notifications. In fact, the sale and use of AirTags are banned in certain countries due to concerns that they could be used to track people without their knowledge.
