Starting with iOS 18.2, Apple has introduced a new feature for AirTag that helps you find lost items in a simpler and more efficient way.
The Find app (Find My) now offers an option called "Share Item Location", which allows the user to temporarily share the location of an AirTag or other compatible device with a trusted person. This feature is specially designed for situations where you lose an important item and need the help of another person to retrieve it quickly.

The new feature is a welcome addition to the app's already existing features Find My for AirTag. Unlike the Share Item option, which provides permanent access to an AirTag's location, the new feature, Share Item Location, focuses on temporary collaboration. The feature allows you to generate a link that can be shared with a person or an airline, making it easier to retrieve lost items such as luggage.
How to find lost items with the new Item Location Sharing feature for AirTag
To use this feature, make sure you have iOS 18.2 installed and follow the steps below:
1. Open the application Finding (Find My) on your iPhone, iPad or Mac.
2. Go to the Items tab.
3. Select the AirTag or other lost item.
4. Scroll down until you see the option "Share Object Location".
5. Follow the on-screen instructions to enable sharing.
The "Share object location" function will generate a link that includes a map with the real-time location of the object you want to find.
This feature is very useful when you need to find lost items or lost luggage between airports. Apple has worked with airlines to integrate support for this feature into their customer support channels. More than 15 airlines have expressed their commitment to provide support, and several of them have already implemented this option.

Apple points out that although their system is designed to protect user privacy, people you share the link with will be able to view certain information about you. Thus, in the Find application (Find My), the serial number of the lost object will be visible, as well as your email address or the phone number associated with the account Apple.
This is an intentional functionality required so that third parties, such as airlines, can contact you during the process of finding your lost item. However, it is important to be aware of these details when you decide to share AirTag information through the Share Item Location feature.
