The iPhone 16e has been launched and represents a true upgrade over its predecessor, the iPhone SE, not just in name but also in design and hardware. At the same time, this launch marks the end of the era of iPhone devices with a Lightning port. As a result, Apple no longer sells new iPhones with a Lightning port, with all officially available models now featuring a USB-C port.
Apple no longer sells iPhone devices with a Lightning port
With the launch of the iPhone 16e, Apple has withdrawn three models from the market: iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, and iPhone SE. These have been completely removed from the official website, thus confirming the definitive discontinuation of the Lightning port on new models. However, users can still purchase refurbished iPhones with a Lightning port directly from Apple or new devices from stores that still have these models in stock.
The transition to the USB-C port began in 2023 with the launch of the iPhone 15 series, after the European Union mandated the use of a universal charging port by 2024. Apple swiftly implemented this change, managing to complete the transition in just two years with the launch of the iPhone 16e.
Although Apple remained loyal to iPhones with a Lightning port for many years, the switch to USB-C for charging and data transfer has brought numerous connectivity advantages, as this standard supports many more technologies.

This change does not only affect iPhones. The new iPad models also feature a USB-C port, completely eliminating the Lightning port from all new iPhones, iPads, and even Macs. However, Apple continues to sell some accessories, such as the first-generation Apple Pencil, which still uses the Lightning port.
Another Apple innovation that disappears with the launch of the iPhone 16e is the Home button. The iPhone SE (third generation) was the last officially sold model to feature this iconic button, first introduced in 2007. With its withdrawal, the Home button becomes history.
