What does USB Restricted Mode, the new feature in iOS 11.4.1, mean?
The new feature can be enabled or disabled from the “Settings”→“Face ID & Passcode” / “Touch ID & Passcode”, through the option “USB Accessories”.
If this option remains deactivated (default setting), the device will not allow USB connections to other devices (PC, Mac, accessories) if it has passed more than an hour since the last unlocking by access code, Face ID or Touch ID.
If the option is ON, your iPhone or iPad will allow USB connections even after this period, which may reduce the level of security.
It is important to note that this restriction does not affect battery charging. The iPhone or iPad can be charged normally even if it is locked, but it will not allow data transfer via USB without authentication.
Why is this function important?
USB Restricted Mode was introduced as a protection measure against hacking devices and techniques used to unlock iPhones without the user's permission, such as GrayKey.
