The update to iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2 introduces the Image Playground app directly on the Home Screen of your iPhone or Mac. This AI-based application allows you to create animated images (with 3D effects) or illustrations based on text descriptions or existing photos on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

What is Apple Image Playground, and how does it work?
Apple Image Playground is an app dedicated to generating images based on text descriptions, enabling you to transform your creative ideas into stylized visuals. Think of it as a tool for fun and creativity, where you can generate animated images or humorous illustrations. Whether you describe “a cat in a Christmas-themed room” or “a funny soccer ball”, the app instantly starts creating your desired image.
Here’s what I got with Image Playground after trying the descriptions above:
Naturally, I couldn’t help but notice the resemblance between images generated by Microsoft’s Copilot app and those created with Playground.
How to Use the Image Playground App on Mac, iPhone, or iPad
The app interface is very intuitive, whether you use it on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. When you open the app, an introductory screen provides instructions on how to use Image Playground, but the process is simple. At the bottom, there’s a text bar labeled “Describe an image” where you can type a word or phrase to describe the image you want the AI to generate. Essentially, you can write anything, such as “two black cats next to a Christmas tree”, and the app will generate multiple images based on your input.
For each generated image, you can refine the result by adding other textual descriptions or using Apple’s suggestions. You’ll receive multiple variations for each description, which you can scroll through and select your favorite. By adding or removing words and phrases, you can fine-tune the image until it perfectly matches your vision.
The results update in seconds after you make adjustments to the generated image. (Yes, I do have two black cats!)
In addition to generating images based on words or text descriptions, Image Playground can create visuals using photos you provide. Whether it’s pictures of people, pets, vacation landscapes, or other images uploaded into the app or imported from the Photos app, the AI processes them uniquely.
Each person’s photo generates a distinct look because Image Playground considers the angle, lighting, and specific features of that image rather than applying a general template. You can swipe through options to see which version best captures the animated appearance you’re after and adjust it further using text descriptions.
If you’re feeling uninspired, you can start with a photo or choose from a wide range of themes to enhance your images:
- Themes: adventure, disco, summer, party, sunset, fantasy.
- Locations: city, space, desert, park, meadow, forest.
- Costumes: artist, cook, hiker, magician, robot, superhero.
- Accessories: sunglasses, fez, party hat, flower crown.
These suggestions are just starting points. You can use textual descriptions to specify any location, objects, or accessories.
Limitations of Image Playground
1. Image Dimensions and Composition for People: You can only generate portraits, with no option for full-body images.
2. Text: The AI struggles to create readable text on images.
3. Restricted Phrases: Terms related to violence, politics, or sensitive topics are blocked.
4. Complex Images: The more detailed the descriptions, the less precise the results may be.

Image generation occurs locally on your device, meaning nothing you input is sent to the cloud. Apple does collect feedback to improve the experience.
