Announced at WWDC 2024 and available this fall, macOS Sequoia brings some very important new features. If you are a user of Mac and install macOS 15.1 you can download apps from App Store to external drive, freeing up storage space on your Mac.
How can you download apps from App Store on external disk (macOS Sequoia)
Starting with macOS 15.1 beta 3, Apple added a new option where users can choose to download apps from App Store directly to an external hard drive, thus avoiding taking up your Mac's storage space. This feature is very useful especially for those who have MacBook with small storage capacity of 125GB or 256GB.
Once this option is enabled you can download apps from App Store on external disk, provided they are larger than 1 GB. Apps smaller than 1GB will automatically download to your Mac's storage, without you having the option to download and install them to an external hard drive.
Also, starting with macOS Sequoia, App Store it no longer requires double the storage space of the app size to start downloading. In the past, downloading a 2GB app required at least 4GB available on your Mac. Now the free space requirement will only be the final size of the application, plus a small buffer.
"Starting with macOS 15 App Store no longer requires double free space to download and install an app. The new requirement will be the final application size plus a small buffer. Developers should consider this change when communicating space requirements.”
macOS Sequoia will be available to the public starting September 9, and macOS 15.1 is scheduled to be released at the end of October.
